BRILLIANCE IN PERFORMANCE
… or, You Had Me at “Hello”
This is the first in a series of articles designed to
lend a hand, give some tips, and otherwise give you a leg up on performance and
presentation. Originally published as a series entitled “Brilliance in
Performance” (after all, that WAS the topic!); they appeared between 1998-2000
in the broadcast industry’s most powerful e-newsletter, “SHOPTALK” (http://www.tvspy.com/shoptalk.cfm).
This e-rag is the brainchild of renowned industry head-hunter Don Fitzpatrick
and is read by more than 100,000 television and radio broadcasters daily… and
internationally.
Then as now, I put forth that top performers in any
profession stay on top because they are always searching for new and better ways
to improve themselves and the way they come across. The smart ones also know
that we either turn people on or off by how we sound and deliver our message. By
improving not only our voice and ability to deliver our message, but also our
awareness of ourselves and others, we improve relationships with business
associates, friends, loved ones – even those we meet for the first time! Growing
up, most of us weren’t taught the most effective way to sound, speak and
communicate - or even how to be comfortable within ourselves; a powerful
communication tool in itself.
The BIP series focused specifically upon voice,
preparation, delivery – and various performance-oriented tools required to give
a great presentation, regardless of venue.
These tools, techniques and ideas have been distilled out
of 20 years of performance and coaching experience in both the broadcast
industry and in business. They’re simple - and they’ve proven themselves to be
golden nuggets of info that are worth sharing – and using.
I’ve left the title of these articles as is; “Brilliance
in Performance”… since that’s what they’re still about. These simple “tricks of
the trade” allow you to be better, have more “wow”, be more brilliant – and
connect with others as the more delightfully individual and authentic YOU.
That’s the biggest edge you possess… All That Is You. NO ONE can do you as well
as you can. You’ve got the corner on that market – and if you can focus and free
up enough to let it rip – well, there’s no telling what’ll happen!
“Brilliance in Performance” is posted, free of charge –
as a way to accomplish what my best mentor always admonished me to do; “Give
back!”. I know they are a simplification of a complex journey – but are meant as
a way of introducing ideas, giving tips and suggesting directions into various
means of becoming a more successful communicator… and happier “you”. I hope you
enjoy – and do let me know of any success stories!
Cheers,
Karen Hutton
